3D Animation :)

I have now started a new project which will last for three weeks. The project is to produce a station identification 3D animation for a fictional cabal channel that holds audience interest in the interval between shows slots. To produce the animation ill be using 3ds Max and premier pro to design build and animate a thirty second identification for my fictional station.

My first seminar consisted of learning the basics of the 3ds Max software so that I am now prepared to produce a successful 3D animation. I really enjoyed this seminar because I have never done anything to do with 3D animation before, so it’s good to gain a new experience which I am really curious about and interested in.

I made my first 3D animation in the seminar which I was really happy with for my first creation.

A design process on a past project

In my first year of sixth form I was given a coursework assignment for one of my A level subjects; Film studies. I created a short horror/thriller film called ‘Without Intent’. For this particular kind of media based product I came up with a strategic design process in order to produce something successful for my target audience.
In the beginning I obviously had to come up with an idea for a short film. My idea all began from an inspiration from a scene in a film that created an impressive impact. The film was directed by one of my favourite directors known as ‘James Wan’ who has created a successful range of films, such as the First ‘SAW’ movie that carried on to be a sequel and ‘Dead Silence’. The film that gave me the inspiration to make a similar sort of film, with a similar kind of genre for example Thriller. The film was called ‘Death Sentence’. The difference with my film is I wanted a mix of genre which was horror and thriller.

My short film has a completely different story to tell in comparison to ‘Death Sentence’; However my film has similar conventions to a particular scene that inspired me. What I liked so much about this specific scene in ‘Death Sentence’ is the intensity it creates which is a great impact to engage an audience and make them feel uncomfortable and unsettled at the same time. From this I wanted to produce a similar type of impact and conventions.

To begin with I started mind-mapping down the ideas I had for my short film and the main plot for my story, which is also known as a synopsis. Once I had my main ideas written on paper I produced a storyboard to give me a visual idea of what I was going to produce. I drew the main outline of the film and the scenes that had the most importance within the story.  By each drawing in my storyboard I had a detailed description of the scene in my film for example the shot length, purpose, lighting and an explanation of the scene.
After creating a storyboard for my film I continued to produce more paperwork to help me with organisation, allowing me to know exactly what it is I had to do within the deadline I was given to complete my short film. The paperwork I carried out for my film was a risk assessment, equipment list, budget sheet, contact / profile sheet, and a work schedule. Once I had produced and filled in all my paperwork I was ready to start producing my short film.

Once I had edited my film it was ready to be shown to my target audience. From this I gained feedback which allowed me to recognise what I could improve for next time and whether my style for the film was a success. The feedback also allowed me to evaluate my work which was a part of my coursework.

Visual Story time :)

I was given the task to make three short visual stories consisting of five images for each story. The first story is called DeathLift which is about a killer who attacks a harmless character using a lift, this idea was a random idea that I thought would work quite well to get straight to the point which is what I needed for a story consisting of five pictures which is really, really short.

The next story is about the life of a fly which is what the story is also called, I invented this idea literally as I was sitting in my kitchen trying to think of something to produce where a fly appeared on the table near me, so I began from there and I created a short visual story out of it...... R.I.P Fly ;)

The next story is a bit weird to be honest but I wanted to produce something different that I know is a bit taboo which probably hasn’t been created before... or maybe it has I don’t know. Anyways this story is a story about a living Henry Hoover sneaking into its owner’s room and viewing an erotic film.... I say no more!

Multimedia so far! :)

So far pretty much I have had an introduction to the course. From this I am aware that its 40% to pass each module and each module must be passed with flying colors in order to carry on to the next year :).

To begin with I and some of my peers created a whiteboard animation consisting of a house and a box mixed with our own imagination. I was impressed with the outcome with the time we were given to produce this animation.

So far I have learnt some really interesting things such as creating a camera out of an energy drink can. When you think about it, it’s hard to get your head around the technology with creating a camera out of a normal empty energy drink can. This is because there is literally no technology to it what so ever but it has a way of producing an image which is really interesting.

As you can see from the image it litrally is a can and some gaffer tape. from when i first heard that we have to make a camera out of the three materials. i couldnt get my head around it which is probably what your thinking now.

Well I started with cutting the top of the can off. Once this had been done cut out a square piece of card and place it over the top of the can and create a lid with gaffer tape and the card which stops direct sunlight entering the can which would stop the camera producing an image.

Before the process of actually taking a picture, I had to go to a dark room where no light could affect the photo paper. Once the lid had been made I pierced the can approximately in the centre with a pin, the pin hole is where the camera will produce the image.

I then had to create something to cover the pinhole so that the sunlight isn’t always able to get through the pinhole. This is because when you want to get an image you point the can at something you want to take a picture of remove the gaffer tape covering the pinhole and count approximately between 8-11 seconds then cover the pinhole back up with the gaffer tape.

The paper was then inserted into the can leaving a gap between the pinhole so sunlight can travel straight through projecting an image on the paper. The lid was then placed back onto the can and the camera is ready to go.

I wanted to produce something different to an image of a tree or the side of a road, so i decided to go to the top floor in the Newton building to get a landscape image of the Nottingham city. Unfortunately my image was unsuccessful as I didn’t point the can correctly into a position to get this image as I only got the sky line, so on the paper only faint lines appeared.
