Interactive Space rationale

This assignment I found quite hard, I enjoyed the concept of creating something that was interactive and consisted of creating a story that allowed the audience to navigate through the story. However I found it hard to create my interactive space, it was the html coding that I didn’t enjoy because I didn’t understand it so well, I found it quite tedious and repetitive unfortunately. Before creating my interactive space i was inspired by an old PC game called ‘DOOM’. I thought because this assignment is about creating something interactive the best thing to create would be something that is like a computer game, which is why I was inspired by ‘DOOM’. My interactive space has a 1st person view perspective where you have to go through levels of a lift and defeat a different boss on each level in order to survive the game.   If I was to do this project again i would improve my work by taking better pictures for the interactive space, by using a better camera that would allow me give to take higher quality photos that would be more impressive and engaging for the audience. i would also add more depth to the game itself and create more levels for the interactive space to make it more entertaining. however I would find a way to shorten the interactive space but make it just as effective at entertaining the audience, for example I would remove images that didn’t have as much relevance to the story and insert pictures that contain more information from the picture that are displayed within the interactive space. I was most happy with the consistency and that it finally started to come together once I got the hang of the coding side of creating the interactive space.

The one and only...... ONE SHOT FILM!!!!!!

This is my final one shot film edited by myself. I am really happy with the outcome and the effect it has on its intended audience. I think the music creates a build up insight to the one shot film that creates an intense, uncomfortable feeling, which leads onto the fear of what is going to happen in the story. The blood really stands out as it lays on the surface of snow on the ground. I wanted the audience to think for themselves and have their own imagination as the story begins, for example when the camera follows the blood trail no information is given which I wanted the audience to think and want to know what is happening and what is going to happen.

Practice Attempt for the one shot film assignment!

Before making the final one shot film, me and my group created a practice one shot film (UN edited). The practice one shot film gave me the inspiration to produce something better that was more simple but effective and intense at the same time.

One shot film rationale :) 300 words ish......

For my third and final assignment in this first term, I was assigned to create a one shot film. I was given set rules when creating my one shot film. I really enjoyed this project because I’m most interested in the film aspect within media. The assignment was challenging from the set rules, this made the assignment fun and enjoyable because I had to create something that was quite difficult to produce. I had to create a film that was obviously entertaining however I was only allowed to film one shot that was only allowed one movement, this made it difficult to successfully entertain an audience. I am really happy with the outcome of my one shot film; I believe I am successful at engaging an audience from the use of conventions I have used from taking advantage of the genre I chose which was horror. I used a high contrast effect for the blood trail that stands out with the snow on the pathway. I think it was lucky to have snow on the day that I and my group decided to film. The snow fits in well with our story as it made the film look more effective and intense. The idea that I had for the film is really simple, I wanted to create a short horror film, so I thought the best thing to do is a first person shot following a blood trail to find a zombie eating a human. The zombie then notices the person following the trail and chases after the character that sees this horrific event. I used intense background music that builds up and glorifies the intensity of the events that occur in the film. If I had more time to film I would have retook the shot to get a smoother, flowing sequence.
Assignment rules:
·         You must use a tripod/camera support when shooting this film (i.e. not handheld)

·         The camera may either pan/zoom/crab or track only once

·         Title sequences and credits must be overlaid on to the image and included within the shot   if added during post production i.e. not on a black background or still shot.

My 3D animation ident 'BIG SPLAT TOONZ' (no sound)

333 word rationale (animation Ident)

This project consisted of producing a 3D animation identification for a fictional cabal channel that holds audience interest in the interval between shows slots. To create my animation ident I used a program called 3ds Max. My animation ident is for a fictional children’s TV station called ‘Big Splat Toonz’. My reason for the choice of name is because I think ‘Big Splat Toonz’ would appeal to my targeted audience, children from the ages 5-13. In terms of using the 3dsMax software I really enjoyed using it; however from other animation examples I have seen I realize how vast this program is and how basic I am at using this software at this time. However I am keen on learning the program further. One thing I didn’t like about it is the frustration it creates as I’m so new to using 3dsMax, for example when something went wrong I seemed to restart from the beginning because I had no idea on how to re correct anything. Such as if I moved a part of my animation and it was in the completely wrong place sometimes it ruined the animation and I couldn’t un-do my mistake every time which was a pain. In terms of being so new to 3dsMax, I am really happy with what I have produced; I think the use of colors is attractive to look at, that would grab the attention of my young audience which is purposely designed to keep the audience watching this fictional TV station. I decided to create a cartoon character that scattered across the screen between the texts added into the animation. My main purpose of this was to entertain and engage my audience. The good thing about the character I produced is it doesn’t grab your entire attention but it keeps you entertained and makes you read the text that stands out as it appears big and bold, purposely placed in the center of the screen making it really easy to read and remember.

Inspirations, research, and pre production :)

Before beginning the production of my Ident I explored the internet to gain some inspiration and research other TV idents. I already had my idea to produce a children’s TV ident so I looked at other idents within the same category. I looked at ‘Cartoon Network’ and ‘Disney’ and ‘Nickelodeon’. These are all children’s TV stations in case you didn’t already know. ;)

With my own ident I wanted to do something with splat animations, this gave me the idea to come up with the name of my ident which is quite simple but attractive for the genre or type of TV station I wanted to produce. So I came up with 'Big Splat Toonz'. I first designed the text for my ident. Once I had the idea and what I wanted to do in my head I produced a simple storyboard allowing me to organize and know exactly what I wanted to do when producing my ident in 3dsMax.

Once I created my storyboard I was ready to begin producing the animation for my ident.

3D Animation :)

I have now started a new project which will last for three weeks. The project is to produce a station identification 3D animation for a fictional cabal channel that holds audience interest in the interval between shows slots. To produce the animation ill be using 3ds Max and premier pro to design build and animate a thirty second identification for my fictional station.

My first seminar consisted of learning the basics of the 3ds Max software so that I am now prepared to produce a successful 3D animation. I really enjoyed this seminar because I have never done anything to do with 3D animation before, so it’s good to gain a new experience which I am really curious about and interested in.

I made my first 3D animation in the seminar which I was really happy with for my first creation.

A design process on a past project

In my first year of sixth form I was given a coursework assignment for one of my A level subjects; Film studies. I created a short horror/thriller film called ‘Without Intent’. For this particular kind of media based product I came up with a strategic design process in order to produce something successful for my target audience.
In the beginning I obviously had to come up with an idea for a short film. My idea all began from an inspiration from a scene in a film that created an impressive impact. The film was directed by one of my favourite directors known as ‘James Wan’ who has created a successful range of films, such as the First ‘SAW’ movie that carried on to be a sequel and ‘Dead Silence’. The film that gave me the inspiration to make a similar sort of film, with a similar kind of genre for example Thriller. The film was called ‘Death Sentence’. The difference with my film is I wanted a mix of genre which was horror and thriller.

My short film has a completely different story to tell in comparison to ‘Death Sentence’; However my film has similar conventions to a particular scene that inspired me. What I liked so much about this specific scene in ‘Death Sentence’ is the intensity it creates which is a great impact to engage an audience and make them feel uncomfortable and unsettled at the same time. From this I wanted to produce a similar type of impact and conventions.

To begin with I started mind-mapping down the ideas I had for my short film and the main plot for my story, which is also known as a synopsis. Once I had my main ideas written on paper I produced a storyboard to give me a visual idea of what I was going to produce. I drew the main outline of the film and the scenes that had the most importance within the story.  By each drawing in my storyboard I had a detailed description of the scene in my film for example the shot length, purpose, lighting and an explanation of the scene.
After creating a storyboard for my film I continued to produce more paperwork to help me with organisation, allowing me to know exactly what it is I had to do within the deadline I was given to complete my short film. The paperwork I carried out for my film was a risk assessment, equipment list, budget sheet, contact / profile sheet, and a work schedule. Once I had produced and filled in all my paperwork I was ready to start producing my short film.

Once I had edited my film it was ready to be shown to my target audience. From this I gained feedback which allowed me to recognise what I could improve for next time and whether my style for the film was a success. The feedback also allowed me to evaluate my work which was a part of my coursework.

Visual Story time :)

I was given the task to make three short visual stories consisting of five images for each story. The first story is called DeathLift which is about a killer who attacks a harmless character using a lift, this idea was a random idea that I thought would work quite well to get straight to the point which is what I needed for a story consisting of five pictures which is really, really short.

The next story is about the life of a fly which is what the story is also called, I invented this idea literally as I was sitting in my kitchen trying to think of something to produce where a fly appeared on the table near me, so I began from there and I created a short visual story out of it...... R.I.P Fly ;)

The next story is a bit weird to be honest but I wanted to produce something different that I know is a bit taboo which probably hasn’t been created before... or maybe it has I don’t know. Anyways this story is a story about a living Henry Hoover sneaking into its owner’s room and viewing an erotic film.... I say no more!

Multimedia so far! :)

So far pretty much I have had an introduction to the course. From this I am aware that its 40% to pass each module and each module must be passed with flying colors in order to carry on to the next year :).

To begin with I and some of my peers created a whiteboard animation consisting of a house and a box mixed with our own imagination. I was impressed with the outcome with the time we were given to produce this animation.

So far I have learnt some really interesting things such as creating a camera out of an energy drink can. When you think about it, it’s hard to get your head around the technology with creating a camera out of a normal empty energy drink can. This is because there is literally no technology to it what so ever but it has a way of producing an image which is really interesting.

As you can see from the image it litrally is a can and some gaffer tape. from when i first heard that we have to make a camera out of the three materials. i couldnt get my head around it which is probably what your thinking now.

Well I started with cutting the top of the can off. Once this had been done cut out a square piece of card and place it over the top of the can and create a lid with gaffer tape and the card which stops direct sunlight entering the can which would stop the camera producing an image.

Before the process of actually taking a picture, I had to go to a dark room where no light could affect the photo paper. Once the lid had been made I pierced the can approximately in the centre with a pin, the pin hole is where the camera will produce the image.

I then had to create something to cover the pinhole so that the sunlight isn’t always able to get through the pinhole. This is because when you want to get an image you point the can at something you want to take a picture of remove the gaffer tape covering the pinhole and count approximately between 8-11 seconds then cover the pinhole back up with the gaffer tape.

The paper was then inserted into the can leaving a gap between the pinhole so sunlight can travel straight through projecting an image on the paper. The lid was then placed back onto the can and the camera is ready to go.

I wanted to produce something different to an image of a tree or the side of a road, so i decided to go to the top floor in the Newton building to get a landscape image of the Nottingham city. Unfortunately my image was unsuccessful as I didn’t point the can correctly into a position to get this image as I only got the sky line, so on the paper only faint lines appeared.

The past :)

Hey guys and girls.

Just getting involved with the blogging :)

I have produced different media based products in the past in my own spare time and for college projects. I would just like to share with anyone doing the multimedia course the media based work I have produced. Some of the stuff I have produced is pretty ancient and other things are recent. I enjoy producing anything really from short films and poster campaigns to websites and many other things that i cant really think of right now ;)

Another thing the short film i have included in this blog, ignore the acting by myself and my mates as its pretty poor ha. this was the first short film i created in A/S Film Studies.

Let me know what you think, thanks

The beginning of Awesomeness!

I don’t really know where to begin with this so im just going to write random things that im excited about to do with the course and the fact that im in a completely different place which I am loving so far.

I am excited about learning new techniques to do with moving image and still image work, I have a passion to create and edit films and I also enjoy producing still images and manipulating them to create a meaning or purpose.

I have so much more to talk about and share but that will happen in good time :)
